Recent Chinese Studies conferences in Europe (as well as the establishment of WAGNet, an initiative of European Association of Chinese Studies members, in 2001) have testified to the growing visibility and strength of gender-centred research, and of their significance to on-going debates in all spheres of scholarship. But there is a distinct lack of opportunities for academic exchanges in the field, particularly for young scholars.

In 1998, Professor Harriet Zurndorfer at Leiden University organised the first gender-centred graduate workshop for Ph.D. students in Chinese Studies. Following its success, WAGNet is planning a second workshop entitled 'Gender in Chinese Studies: Approaches and Directions', to be held in September 2003 at Oxford University, UK.
